Hardiness: This plant is highly drought and heat tolerant, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil.

Planting and Location

• Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives full sun. Portulaca thrives in bright light and its flowers open fully when exposed to direct sunlight12.

• Soil: Use well-drained soil. Portulaca prefers sandy or rocky soil but can also do well in well-draining potting soil12.

Watering

• Frequency: Water sparingly. Portulaca is drought-tolerant and does not require frequent watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

• Method: Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can help prevent fungal diseases.

Fertilizing

• Type: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season1.

• Frequency: Fertilize sparingly. Too much fertilizer can lead to lush foliage but fewer flowers.

Pruning and Maintenance

• Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

• Pruning: Pinch back the tips of the plant to promote bushier growth and more flowers.

Winter Care

• Indoors: If you live in a region with cold winters, you can bring the plant indoors to protect it from frost4.

• Outdoors: In warmer climates, Portulaca can be left outside year-round

Pests and Diseases

• Pests: Generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for aphids and spider mites2.

• Diseases: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.

• Bloom Time: It blooms from late spring through early fall, providing continuous color throughout the growing season3.
